Additional Features of Tactile Tile
All tiles feature truncated domes that are 0.2” high, 0.9” in diameter, and spaced in line a maximum of 2.35”—per Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. Panels are available in dimensions of 24” x 36”, 24” x 38”, 24” x 60”, and 36” x 48”. Composed of glass and carbon reinforced composite, each panel has fiberglass-reinforced domes and is uniform in color.
The tiles have the physical strength and durability to last on high-traffic curbs and sidewalks. They feature a compressive strength of 28,900 psi and a flexural strength of 29,300 psi. Slip-resistant, they also resist water absorption and salt spray (per 200-hour ASTM testing). The products are resistant to deterioration from chemical staining and disintegration from heat and freeze/thaw cycles.
The panels are set by installing them in wet, freshly poured cement using a rubber mallet and wood. Once the concrete cures, the surface can handle pedestrian traffic. The process generally takes two to four hours.
What Is a Tactile Warning Surface?
Our Cast-in-Place replaceable panels contain surfaced features to alert those who pass over them. They provide a textured ground surface on sidewalks, footpaths, and stairs, and on train station platforms. Primarily an aid to alert individuals who are visually impaired, ADA tile offers a detectable warning for those using wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers. They’re typically found on sidewalk curb ramps at street intersections, and ADA sidewalks in public and private locations.
Most importantly, tactile warning surfaces enable disabled pedestrians to access areas that could be quite dangerous. The surface alerts them to a change in surface conditions. This could be where the street meets the sidewalk or a paved sidewalk leads to a ramp. The panels are pressed into concrete when it is freshly poured for a curb ramp. Heavy-duty steel bolts are used to secure each panel in place; secured into concrete inserts, the bolts are fixed 2” into the concrete surface and the fastening bolts are topped by a watertight cap.
If the panel needs to be replaced, the bolts are removable (while the inserts remain), so the panel takes only minutes to change out.
The durability of the truncated domes makes each detectable warning surface all that much more versatile. In addition to ADA-compliant, these domes are UV-, moisture-, and chemical-resistant. As a result, the cast-in-place tactile panels comply with all regulations at the local, state, and federal level.
